Meet Sandra Anderson: A Danish Pastry Chef Student’s Culinary Adventure at Karen Blixen Coffee Garden
At Karen Blixen Coffee Garden, we’re always excited to welcome new faces into our kitchen. Recently, we’ve had the pleasure of hosting Sandra Anderson, a passionate pastry chef student from Zealand Business College in Denmark, who chose Kenya for her fourth-year internship. In our interview, Sandra shared her unique journey and what brought her back to our vibrant country.
Sandra, who has already traveled to an impressive 26 countries, explained that her course allows students to select different countries for their internships, giving them a global perspective on the culinary arts. It was through one of her school leaders, who helps students find international contacts, that Sandra was introduced to the idea of coming to Kenya—and specifically to Karen Blixen Coffee Garden.
But this isn’t Sandra’s first visit to our beautiful country. Two years ago, she visited Kenya with her family and even dined at Karen Blixen Coffee Garden & Cottages. That experience left a lasting impression, making Kenya one of her top three favorite countries. “I love Kenya,” Sandra says with a smile. “The people here are so kind, and there’s just something special about the atmosphere. It’s a place that stays with you long after you leave.”
Sandra and her family have always had a deep love for travel, exploring new cultures, and discovering unique cuisines. This love for travel is one of Sandra’s biggest inspirations as a pastry chef. Her dream is to continue traveling around the world, learning from different culinary traditions, and bringing those diverse flavors into her creations.
Her experience here at Karen Blixen Coffee Garden has been nothing short of delightful. “Everyone is so friendly and eager to teach me,” Sandra shares. “It feels like a family here, and I’m learning so much about using local ingredients to create unique pastries. It’s an enriching experience that I know will shape my career.”
Sandra is also looking forward to a special trip next week to our camp in the Maasai Mara, where she’ll get a taste of the wild beauty of Kenya and perhaps find more inspiration for her pastry creations. After her adventure with us, Sandra’s culinary journey continues to Italy, where she will take on her next internship.
We are grateful to be a part of Sandra’s global culinary journey and are inspired by her passion for learning and exploration. Her love for Kenya and our kitchen has been a joy to witness, and we look forward to seeing where her talent takes her next.
For now, we’re enjoying every moment with Sandra and are excited to see what delicious creations she dreams up before her next adventure begins!
