This past Sunday marked International Chef’s Day, a global celebration of the creativity, dedication, and artistry of chefs worldwide. At Karen Blixen Coffee Garden and Cottages, we’re delighted to take this moment to honor our exceptional Executive Chef, Cosmas Kituku. His journey is not just a testament to culinary excellence but also an inspiring tale of passion and perseverance.

Chef Cosmas’ love for cooking ignited in his childhood in the vibrant coastal town of Mombasa. Accompanying his mother, who sold woven bags, to hotels like Serena Beach Resort, he was captivated by the sight of chefs in their towering hats. That image planted the seed for his dream of becoming a chef. Yet, his path was fraught with challenges. His father, a marine engineer, envisioned a future for Cosmas in engineering and dismissed his culinary aspirations as a “woman’s job.” Despite the lack of support, Chef Cosmas remained resolute, driven by his passion for food and cooking.

With over 35 years of experience, Chef Cosmas has played a pivotal role in reshaping African cuisine. His illustrious career has taken him across some of the most prestigious hospitality brands, including the Sarova Group of Hotels in Kenya, Baobab Beach Resort, and Marriott Hotels in London. He has also made significant contributions to the Serena Group of Hotels, showcasing his culinary expertise on a global scale.

Throughout his remarkable career, Chef Cosmas has had the privilege of cooking for numerous distinguished personalities, including Queen Elizabeth II, His Highness the Aga Khan, Nelson Mandela, and Hillary Clinton. His interactions with celebrity chefs around the world have enriched his culinary journey, establishing him as a respected figure in the culinary arts.

Beyond his kitchen accomplishments, Chef Cosmas is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of culinary talent. He has mentored young chefs across Africa, including those in Tanzania, Mozambique, Uganda, and Sierra Leone, taking pride in their success as they rise to leadership positions in the industry. As a staunch advocate for homegrown talent, he believes in the potential of Kenya’s culinary schools to cultivate world-class chefs.
